ISSUE / SYMPTOM

Ethernet/IP connection times out every 120 seconds causing faults on the PLC/scanner.

POSSIBLE CAUSES / ANSWER

In accordance with the Ethernet/IP specification the Ethernet/IP target will close its connects after not receiving encapsulation activity within the Encapsulation Inactivity Timeout (object class 0xF5, instance 1, attribute 13) time. The default value is 120 (seconds).  Older Ethernet/IP Originators may not support the parameter and do not send encapsulated traffic often enough. This will often show up in the PLC as timeouts.

It is common that older Rockwell ethernet cards require a firmware update to support the Encapsulation timeout.  It is recommended to update the cards firmware.

Alternatively, you can disable the Encapsulation Inactivity Timeout by setting the parameter to 0.  Disable Encapsulation Inactivity Timeout
