How To Setup AWB514X as a Router

This article describes steps to configure the AWB5141/AWB5142 to act as your router at home. The device will route packets between the LAN (including port 1 and the WiFi (WLAN)) and the WAN (on port 2).

  • PC to access the AWB5141X with an Ethernet port and cable

Connecting to the AWB514X

  1. Ensure that the network adapter of your PC is manually set to the same subnet as the AWB5141X (default subnet 192.168.10.x, subnet mask 255.255.255.0).
  2. Connect the AWB514X to the network adapter of your PC, open a browser and enter the default IP address 192.168.10.1 to navigate to the configuration pages.

 

Configuring the Network Settings

  1. Select System and then Network Settings
  2. Set the network mode to Router and submit
    • This will split the two Ethernet ports into WAN and LAN
    • Ensure you are connected to port 1 for LAN access to the device
  3. Under the WAN Settings select "DHCP Client" under Type
  4. Set the LAN Settings to the desired local network IP address, subnet mask and gateway
  5. Click Submit

Configuring the DHCP Server

  1. Navigate to System and then DHCP Server
  2. Under DHCP Settings, select "Enable"
  3. Set the IP Address Start and IP Address End to match LAN subnet
  4. Set Gateway to LAN interface IP Address as set in the previous section

Configuring the WLAN Settings

  1. Navigate to System and then Wireless LAN
  2. Under Wireless LAN, select the WLAN Settings
    • Settings here can be applied to WLAN1, WLAN2 or both. WLAN1 works at 2.4 GHz, while WLAN2 at 5 GHz.
  3. Set the following parameters. These are the minimal settings needed to allow devices to discover and connect:
    • WLAN interface Enabled
    • Operating mode AP
    • Broadcast SSID Enabled
    • Set Channel to Auto.
  4. Click Submit.

Configuring the WLAN Security

  1. Under Wireless LAN, select the WLAN Security
  2. Set the desired encryption type
    • WPA2-PSK is mostly used.  The two other modes can be set if appropriate.
  3. When selecting WPA2-PSK, you need to set the WPA Pre-Shared Key
    • This is the password you will enter to connect to the SSID
  4. Click Submit
  5. Be sure to enable encryption for both WLAN1 and WLAN2!

Finally, hit Save at the top right, making sure all your settings are permanently saved to flash memory.

 

When your settings are submitted, they are applied, but only stored in volatile memory.  A reboot during the setup process will cause the AWB5141X to revert to the previous settings. In order to maintain your settings, you will need to actively save them, thus storing them to flash.
